The story behind this album is arguably better known than the record itself. To summarise Mr and Mrs Gaye divorced in 1977. One of the stipulations of the split was that Marvin had to half of the percentage of album royalties he would earn from his next Motown album to his former bedsharer. Being a forgiving man he decided to recorded a double-album about the end of a relationship. The result? An album that was a commerical and critical flop forty years ago, but is now considered one of his best - although it isn't as good as his earlier stuff.

Following the politically charged 'What's Going On?' and an album called 'Trouble Man', Marvin Gaye introduced the world to the sexually charged, 'Let's Get It On'. For years couples had been limited to choosing between Joan Baez or Deep Purple when doing 'it', but this record made it all the more romantic.
