877. Kid Rock - Devil Without A Cause

Kid Rock-Devil Without a Cause (album cover).jpg

Release Date: 1998
Label: Atlantic

The line that confirmed my opinion of the album was something like, 'I don't tend to like big women/but somehow I always find myself in 'em'.

827. Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded

Tracey Thorn has an excellent voice, and some of these songs a very good.

714. The Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray

Lemonheads It's a Shame About Ray.jpg

Release Date: 1992
Label: Atlantic

This was something I really enjoyed, and it was particularly nice to hear an album under forty minutes for what seems like forever.

598 - Astor Piazolla & Gary Burton - The New Tango

Release Date: 1987
Label: Atlantic

This is the kind of tango I recognise. Wikipedia refuses to recognise this album too, which is possibly a first. The album isn't terrible, but the music is forgettable.

437. Chic - Risque

Chic-Risque.jpg

Release Date: 1979
Label: Atlantic

I criticised their last album for lacking 'pizzazz' and they seem to have listened to me. This is a much better collection of songs and there is no doubt you will have a good time listening to this album. Is it worth listening to over and over though? Yes

427. AC/DC - Highway to Hell

Acdc Highway to Hell.JPG

Release Date: 1979
Label: Atlantic

AC/DC follow a formula of throat-shedding vocals, a guitarist who looks like Jimmy Crankie and a fanatical devotion to the Pope. 'Highway To Hell' is their sixth album and was released two years after 'Street to Sin' and 'Motorway to Madness' topped the charts in Australlia. This was the last album they released before lead-singer Bon Scott died - not that you'd ever have noticed.

423. Chic - C'est Chic

C'est Chic cover.jpg

Release Date: 1978
Label: Atlantic

One of the few Disco acts featured in the book, Chic - and especially the guitar work of Nile Rodgers - are one of the pillars of the genre. There are hits on this album, 'Le Freak' and 'I Want Your Love' but overall the album lacks the pizzazz needed.

250. Yes - Close To The Edge

Yes-close.jpg

Release Date: 1972
Label: Atlantic

Yes (known as Oui in France) come at us with this relatively short (for Prog) album of three songs. They are all very good in their own right, especially the first two and this is great record for the boys from Birmingham. The music is, as always, highly ambitious - ranging from 'gothic organs to furious jazz to rock grooves.' to quote the book.

237. John Prine - John Prine

John Prine self-titled.jpg

Release Date: 1971
Label: Atlantic

John Prine was one of the many 'Next Dylans' that have been around since 1963, and it is obvious as to why. This almost sounds like a parody of Dylan's early vocal style and nothing will ever detract from that. The songs are supposed to be funny but, despite the quality lyrics, it just got on my nerves really.

225. Led Zeppelin - IV

On a rough wall hangs a painting of an elderly man in a field with a large bundle of sticks tied to his back.
Release Date: 1971
Label: Atlantic

Like the previous three Led Zeppelin albums, I already own this - and it's the one I've owned the longest. Probably bought because it has 'Stairway to Heaven' on, it is also my favourite Led Zep record.

218. Yes - Fragile

Fragile (Yes album) cover art.jpg

Release Date: 1971
Label: Atlantic

With Rick Wakeman now in the band, the brilliant and occasionally pretentious music continues with 'Fragile'. This is a better album than the previous one and the opening track, 'Roundabout' is especially wonderful. None of the songs are too long, and some even clock in at less than forty-seconds. This is one for the shelves, definitely.

209. Yes - The Yes Album

The Yes Album.png

Release Date: 1971
Label: Atlantic

Prior to listening to this album, the only thing I knew about Yes was that Rick Wakeman was in them. I knew no songs and couldn't name a single tune. I have now listened to this and discovered Rick Wakeman wasn't even in the band at the time.

This record was pretty good actually, and I can hear myself listening to it again. There is ambition, pretentiousness and ridiculous lyrics but on the whole, I liked this.

206. David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name

Release Date:1971
Label: Atlantic

We've had Stills, Nash and Young so it seems appropriate that Crosby is included in this book. There is sadness in this album, and not only because the artist can't remember his name. There is also the beautiful harmonies that you'd expect to hear throughout. Written in the aftermath of his girfriend's death, the record oozes melancholy and yearning. Standout tracks are 'Music is Love' 'Song with No Words' and the haunting acappella of 'I'd Swear There Was Sombody Here' which is as sad as the title suggest.

Favourite Track: Song With No Words

187. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III

A collage of butterflies, teeth, zeppelins and assorted imagery on a white background, with the artist name and "III" subtitle at center.

Release Date: 1970
Label: Atlantic

The third (obviously) album from Les Zeppelin is perhaps the worst of the band's quartet of classic albums. It is still very good, however. Having owned this for a few years I feel there is no need for me to listen to this again.

Favourite Track: Immigrant Song

184. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - Deja Vu

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Deja Vu.jpg

Release Date: 1970
Label: Atlantic

The first impression you'll get when listening to this album is a strange feeling that you've heard it somewhere before. Of course, it is the first album featuring Neil Young - the quartet would go on to release a couple more in the next twenty years - and another one that I already own. The first impression you'll get when listening to this album is a strange feeling that you've heard it somewhere before. The album has arguably my favourite CSN&Y song in the form of 'Our House' which I remember first hearing in the (what should've really been the) final episode of 'Only Fools and Horses'.I also enjoy 'Teach Your Children' immensely which would clearly suggested I'm more of a Graham Nash fan than anything else.

182. Stephen Stills - Stephen Stills

Stephenstills.jpg

Release Date: 1970
Label: Atlantic

Stephen Stills is the second quarter of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, or the second third of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Either way he's the second something. Perhaps he's the second coming? Before the release of this (his debut solo) album, he'd already achieved success with the aforementioned and also Bungalow Springfield. As far as this album is concerned, there is a feeling of lost chances about it. I'm not sure if he ever released anything as good, but when you consider (for example) Neil Young's solo success, it's easy to wonder what might have been...

157. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II

A composite sepia photograph of the band, with members of the Jasta 11 Division of the Luftstreitkräfte, in front of a hydrogen cloud expanding from an outline of the Hindenburg exploding.

Release Date: 1969
Label: Atlantic

Coming fast after the debut album, the Top of the Pops theme and other songs make up the imaginatively titled 'Led Zeppelin II (pronounced 'too'). Both albums were released in the same year and the fact they are both very good - the second being slightly better - is testament to Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham.

151. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis

Dusty Springfield, Dusty in Memphis (1969).png

Release Date: 1969
Label: Atlantic

Many moons ago I wrote on this blog of my confusion as to why Dusty Springfield was only represented by her debut album. Of course, dear reader, I was wrong. Memphis is often described as Dusty's best work and it's easy to see why. Not only do we have the soul-classic, 'Son of a Preacher Man', one of many songs which can be called Dusty's signature tune, but we also have such highlights as 'So Much Love' and 'Breakfast in Bed'

Rating: 9/10
Favourite Track: Son of a Preacher Man
