This is another 'world music' album which seems to have been chosen to satisfy the commitee and not because of its quality. There must be better examples than this.
In an earlier edition of this book, albums by Britney Spears and Christina Aguelira are included. In a later edition, we have albums by Beyonce and Taylor Swift. The trouble is, pop music (of this sort) is disposable by its very nature, and this is another example that doesn't sound that good 21+ years later.
I understand that there is a need to throw the odd 'world' album in now and again, and a lot of it justified in its inclusion, but this just sounded tacky. Also, reading Wikipedia, Koffi Olmomide doesn't sound like a very pleasant person.
I listened to this album whilst driving to the dentist yesterday afternoon and I nearly fell asleep at the wheel. I didn't really, but the album was dull.
Sometimes you just have to admit that you don't share your musical tastes with all the critics and tastemakers. I've heard MBV's second album - Loveless - is the most important album in their canon, so hopefully we'll have better luck there.
For a few years I used to go to a local club in the town centre that played 'Cult of Personality' every weekend because it has something to do with WWE. I've never liked it.
There's a book you may or may not have heard of called '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'. Here is my attempt to do just that. Follow my progress from Frank Sinatra to Arcade Fire as I write my thoughts and feelings about each album.
All errors in this blog are mine, and mine only (unless they're not).
