464. Killing Joke - Killing Joke

Killing Joke album.jpg

Release Date: 1980
Label: EG

This is an album that is hyped by a plethora of future residents of this blog - Nirvana, the Foo Fighters, Mariyln Manson, Soundgarten etc. It is however, not up my street. In fact, I'm not even sure if it's in the same town as me.

425. Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music For Airports

Release Date: 1978
Label: EG

Every time he releases a new album Brian Eno seems to get more experimental. He is also in danger of getting less commercial at the time, and this time he has gone one step too far. Inspired by his love of Heathrow and Gatwick, 'Ambient 1' is the first in a ten-part series of records inspired by transport. 'Ambient 2: Music For Train Stations' is notorious for its chugging rhythms, periodic whistles and occasional station announcements.

362. Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Music From The Penguin Cafe

MusicFromThePenguinCafe(AlbumCover).jpg
Release Date: 1976
Label: EG

Not many bands are inspired by dreams brought on by bouts of food poisioning. In fact, I can only think of five to have originated through this method. Penguin Cafe Orchestra (aka 'Fucking Awful Orchestra' according to other listeners) were an avant-garde band from the 1970s. This, their debut album, is generally considered to be not as good as their sophomore attempt. As far as this album is concerned, I was immediately attracted to its ambition and originality and I feel it would reward repeated listening.
